Historic Town
Publicado: Fri 07 Sep 2012

The historic town of San Miguel de Abona, which has been recently declared Property of Cultural Interest in the Historic group categorie, is one of the best preserved throughout the South of the island of Tenerife.

The historic town extends around the Church through the old Royal Road- today La Iglesia street-until reaching the Calvary and the “House-Museum of the Captain”, in the outskirts of the town.

The Churchof San Miguel Arcangel represents the typical features of the Canarian Baroque temples, use of indigenous materials in its construction and a simple planning in distribution, with a single nave which opens the side chapels. In terms of images, from its origin it has highlighted the presence of San Miguel Arcángel, patron saint of the municipality, Nuestra Señora de La Concepción andSan Jose among others.

A series of traditional buildings, among which is the Municipal Library, are located in the area around  the San Miguel Church square and the birthplace of Juan Bethencourt, a two-storey house with a wide balcony of wood into the backyard.

On the north side of the Church are located the old jets that supplied the village until the 20th century.

Down La Iglesia street, there are several buildings of one or two storeys, with chronologies of the 18th to the 20th century, which are very significant examples of traditional architecture and classicism that was widespread on the island since the mid-19th century,.

We should make mention of two buildings of great quality, which are those belonging to Alfonso and Calzadilla families. The first is a mansion by way of ranch located in an urban area. The House of the Calzadilla stands out for its volume, flat roof and symmetrical arrangement of holes in its facade

Among the properties at the end of the street stands out “The Captain House”, “Casa del Capitán”, a large 18th century country ranch converted into aMuseum ofHistory and Ethnography.
