La Orchilla Ravine

Barranco de La Orchilla is a typical ravine on the south side of the Island, boxed in by constant erosion. Thermophilic vegetation grows there, with willows in the dry riverbed. It also boasts an important juniper wood with many companion species.

Getting there

To get to Barranco de La Orchilla, take the TF-28 road in the town ofSan Miguel, heading in the direction of Grandilla. The road crosses Barranco de La Orchilla at kilometre point 88. The special conservation area extends around 300 m south of the road and 1,000 mnorth.

Governing legislation

Commission Decision of 28th December, 2001, by which the list of sites of Community importance for the Macaronesian biogeographical region was ratified, in application of Council Directive 92/43/EEC. The "Barranco de Niágara" site of Community importance was declared an Environmental Protection Area in Decree 150/2002, of 16th October, by which the Plan for the Territorial Planning of Tenerife Island was definitively ratified. The SCIs changed their name for that of special area of conservation (SAC) when Decree 174/2009, of December 29th, came into force, by which they became part of the special areas of conservation belonging to the Red Natura 2000 on the Canary Islands, and measures were put in place for the conservation of the nature areas.
